I should probably do this . . stock type duals. Aftermarket mufflers, though.1987 Ford LTD Crown Victoria 2-door Coupe - perpetually "sort of" for sale...

taking off too much of the exhaust costs you torque, which usually results in less fuel economy.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I hate it when Y pipes fall off. Gets good and loud in the car. I ended up tiptoeing around town for nearly a week before I found the time to attach some new tubing to quiet things down.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

According to the toyota kids at school, with there lifted tacomas, you don't need the Y-pipe just run it off the cat, that of course has been hollowed out."Shakedown"- 1991 Grand Marquis GS Dual exhaust, Magnaflow xl turbos, Rear anti sway bar, Outlaw 1 wheels, 43k miles

You can do that, but you'll notice a loss of low rpm torque and a lot of noise. The exhaust really should be there, at least up to the mufflers, to ensure decent scavenging effect. I'm not so sure removing the mufflers back makes a big difference, but if you unbolt it behind the converters, you will feel it.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

LOL. You need a *lot* of motor to even begin to justify dual quads, and then you have to know what you're doing to get them close to running right. To really make them spot-on you really have to know your shit. I've run dual 1bbl carbs before on a 4 cyl and it was kind of a pain in the ass. I can't imagine how much more annoying a dual 4bbl is with the secondaries and getting all that tuned.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I haven't read very many, but the few articles I've come across about modern triple-2bbl or dual-4bbl setups, with new designs for the intake, etc., all seem to come to the conclusion that a single 4-bbl produces more power overall anyway.
But, for the nostalgia look.....
Anyhoo, I would guess that the reason those results are like that is because of the difficulty of getting an even air-fuel mixture from both/all-three of them.
Someone once told me they were going to make an attempt at 8 1-bbl carbs for a V8 - each with their own entirely isolated runner, etc.
I imagine trying to tune that would be a NIGHTMARE...1987 Ford LTD Crown Victoria 2-door Coupe - perpetually "sort of" for sale...

1) Judging from a picture and description that surfaced in a thread at the Corral that some SBFtech guys were making fun of, our old pal turbo2256 is now running dual quads on his Mercury. Still with ported D0OE heads, if I understood correctly.
2) A cousin of my wife's told me a story of swapping his preproduction Quadrabog (he worked for Rochester at the time it was developed) for a friend's dual-AFB setup. Said that after enough twiddling, he actually was able to get that setup working correctly WITHOUT a progressive linkage.
3) Especially for a mismatched combo being tuned by an idiot (like me!), it's not a bad idea to run the smallest carb you feel is acceptable (500cfm AFB in my case), with a preference for old-tech stuff that's relatively forgiving so you can get away with having it tuned by an idiot. I've been hearing recently that once you get into modern-tech carbs with modern-tech heads and camshafts, you can make more power by running a carb that's "too big", and even get better-than-stock gas mileage to go with the power gains, but it's got to be tuned right or the car will fall on its face.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

Yeah weve got a single 4bbl on the gmc, and that is finiky enough just tuning the one, not too hard, just can be an annoyance. I think one kid around here has triple duals on his 1500. I just think they should start with spending money to get the rusted frame fixed first is all. I mean when your body mounts are rusted out and your bed is tilted to one side, the first thing you should do is lift your truck right?"Shakedown"- 1991 Grand Marquis GS Dual exhaust, Magnaflow xl turbos, Rear anti sway bar, Outlaw 1 wheels, 43k miles
