hey guys i need some help. recently i have installed a set of aftermarket gages for my car, which for some reason caused a check engine light but i believe that is because when i installed them i got rid of one of the temprature sensors, maby at least thats all i can figure, other than that ever since then its had problems idling, for some reason it idles really high after it warms up, when its cold its like it idles too low because when you put it in gear it will stall but if you start it and run the idle up a bit its just fine, i am honestly at my wits end to figure out what it is. the air cleaner is just fine i checked it, the pcv valve and its components are ok, any advice you could give me would be more than appreciated, also if you could point me in a direction where i could get a drivers rear quarter panel, so i can start to rebuild where i got t boned that would also be awesome, thanks guys

I don't know specifically which temp sensors controls what but one of them will control whether your car is in the enriching stage(choke) or not and if that sensor is not there I'm going to guess the computer is going to think the engine is cold and keep you in the enriching stage, or it could be doing the opposite.
I should probably ask for some details about your car since I'm assuming you have fuel injection with this response. So year and engine would be good info for us.'85 Mercury Grand Marquis

Put the sensor you removed for the new temp gauge back and see if the problem is gone.
I put in aftermarket gauges as well and for my temp gauge I installed it right on the from of the lower intake. That sensor is just for a dummy light in the dash. With it out nothing lights up anyway. I believe there is another more important temp sensor that should remain on the engine...this may be your problem so put it back and see if the problem goes away.~David~

Exactly which sensor(s) did you remove? Pics of the sensors, or at least where they were located would help. Easiest way to see if thats what it is though is to simply put it back how it was and see if the problem is fixed. One of the temperature sensors is critical for the ECM, one is not. If you pull the wrong one, it'll get stupid.
Also, what year car and what engine? Parts are in different places sometimes.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
