    Some Q's about headers.

Hey im looking at getting a set of headers for my 91, My questions are will i have to fab the exhaust to meet the headers as they meet manifolds now. Also will a 5.0 HO header fit onto a LOPO? Im pretty sure they do but just want to check. Also what has to come off the engine to gain enough access to do the job? I know the air intake will need to be popped of, but will the actual intake and any other stuff need to come off. Also what is a good brand of headers, and should i go full length or with shorties. Any help much appreciated as always. I would like to thank everyone a bunch as you always seem to help me out with what I assume to you are simple questions.

yes. the flanges aren't quite big enough, and the bolt spacing on the manifolds is closer than the headers so the flanges won't fit. The flare itself also isn't really big enough, so ideally you'll want to have the existing flare and flange whacked off, and replaced with one that fits. Failing that, grinding the ends out of the existing flange and using fat washers will get the job done, but it might leak.

    Yes.

air filter stuff, air filter bracket, dipstick mounting bracket (double nut, don't have to pull the dipstick), and the smog tube bracket (another double nut). If yours has it, the engine lift brackets that bolt up to the manifolds also need to come off.

shorties far far easier. Noone to my knowlege has successfully gotten long tubes on one of these cars. If its a stock lopo, basic stock HO headers are fine. They're cheap and good quality, and the primary tubes are small enough that they'll work fine with the stock heads. I also like BBK and Ford Racing headers.

Honestly, if you don't have decent dual exhaust currently, headers are a waste of time and money. You're not gonna get a lot out of it. Dual exhaust and good mufflers will do more for you, and unless you have them, the headers aren't going to add any flow capability to the exhaust. The choke point is further back.

The car has dual exhaust on it now. The guy I bought it from had it put on from the cats back. I mainly was looking at doing it because it would sound a bit better, and I just need some small projects to keep me busy this summer. Im lost when I have no school, because im accustom to 30 hr work weeks on top of high school. So when you give me free time i get anxious. Anyway thank you for all your help, It has made a lot of sense and is very helpful.
