    Need instructions on HO conversion

    Yo fellas,

I know there's info on a Lopo conversion to HO but the info is speratic, would you fellas know a thread that lists almost step by step of beginning the Conversion process. I have most of the parts for the HO, just need the ECU.

    Parts I have is:
    8 19 lb injectors
    Explorer throttlebody, upper/lower intake
    Mustang '89 cam
    Powersteering pump
Water pump (current one is shot, empeller inside is shot to hell)
    EGR spacer borred
    springs (front & rear) lower car 1 1/2 - 2 inch
    Shocks (front)
    Radiator (installed)
    Timing chain

I guess what I'm askin is step by step proceedure to uninstall lopo parts an intall Ho parts. I think the Cam an timing parts might be the trickyest. Pix would be apprsheated fellas. Still a Noob worken his way up the todem pole.

    Thanx fellas,

For ease of writing, I'll suggest you purchase a shop manual. That will cover removal/installation of the heads, cam, and intake manifold. Basically remove what you have now, and re-install the HO version of the parts. That covers about 99% of it. The only bits not covered are swapping the ECM. Cam can be done with the engine in place, but you need to pull the radiator and swing the AC condensor out of the way. The cam then slides out of the front. You can use a side handle from a drill with the appropriate thread to thread into the end of the camshaft for easier handling. A long bolt also works. Not absolutely needed, but it does make it easier. You don't want to just slide the cam in and tear the bearings up. Ideally it needs to go straight in without the lobes banging on the cam bearing surfaces. Since thats extremely difficult, just do the best you can to be careful and not beat the bearings up. Also, and this is very important, keep things clean. I would reccomend an extensive cleaning of the engine and engine bay before taking anything apart just to try and minimize the amount of dirt you have to keep out of the engine.

Another thing to mention, I don't think the stock EGR spacer can be bored out enough to match an Explorer intake properly. There isn't enough metal there to open it to 65mm and still get a proper seal. The usual solution for an Explorer TB and upper intake is to use a Lightning EGR spacer in the middle. The stock EGR spacer will match up to an HO upper intake.

I don't see heads mentioned in your list of parts. Are you changing them or no? If not, you're not getting the full upgrade, though it will work with stock heads. If you can, go with something better than E7s. Also, be sure you can get away with this where you live, being as cali smog laws have no relation to reality in the rest of the world.

dam... lightning egr spacer, yeah the heads I don't really know how to uninstall an reinstall them, if its an easy op then I guess I can take a whack at it. I have the Manuel for the Vic but it doesn't tell or show much to the uninstallation of the parts an pieces.

As for the smog im a bit diccy about that to... as long as she appears stock under the hood an has the typical sensors it should pass.

Look up the part on head gasket replacement. That covers removal and installation of cylinder heads. If its not in there, toss that "manual" in the nearest fireplace and go get one thats not useless. I'm a big fan of Ford official shop manuals. It depends how they split them up for your particular year though. My 86 has engine stuff covered in a separate drivetrain manual, but the 91 Mark VII manual covers engine stuff in the main manual.

I wouldn't go with "this should work" living where you live. Go talk to someone who does the smog checks, or talk to people who have done engine swaps in California so you know exactly what you have to do. It would really suck to do all that work, and then find out you can't get the car legal to drive.
