ok my car had a miss and took distributor off and found little metal flakes inside so i replace the Distributor Ignition Pickup and vanes rotor and also clean out the inside.it had oil sludge inside shaft area and on the shaft it has groves up high that were clogged.real important thing is to index the gear to the shaft so when you put it back it lines up.got it back in and its alot better than before

"index the gear to the shaft"
Could you illustrate/explain this in a bit more detail? I've been afraid to check my distributor gear for that exact reason, not wanting to have the timing off when it goes back in.

I've used a magic marker, but same idea. Just line the marks up.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
