    Trans issue

OK, so I tried to search this, but don't know if I wasn't using the right words or what, because I wasn't finding anything.

So teh last three or four times I go to drive the '90, when I put 'er in reverse to back out of my parking spot (after she sits all night, or more than a couple days) everything is cool.

when I put her in drive, more often than not, it takes 5, sometimes up to 10 FULL seconds before she'll go into gear, at first I thought I had accidentally put it in neutral by mistake. It just sat and revved. Once, it went in, and when I stopped at the mailbox and put it in park, and went to take off again, it wouldn't go in gear for the ten seconds, THEN when it shifted from first to second (which seemed to take FOREVER) it SLAMMED into second!

I haven't driven it anymore.....been driving the Ranger.

I have to add that once I do drive it and it's warm everything is good, it works as it should, and it can sit for 8-10 hours at work and it's all good.

fluid level is good, and fluid color is good, although maybe just a tad bit orange, no funny smell to it or anything. When I checked it, it was hot, I had just driven it 50 miles, wiped it off with my fingers, and the fluid was just luke warm.

Any ideas? Am I due for a rebuild?

My first thought would have been that you were low on fluid because something very similar happened to my moms explorer not to long ago. Tranny fluid was leaking (slow leak) from somewhere for a couple of days but I couldn't find out where it was coming from. After taking a drive went to put it into reverse, it tool a bit longer that usual then the next day the transmissions front pump seal bursted and was forced to rebuild it. I know it is not the same transmission or the same circumstances but it is something to ponder.

I had a TH-350 do that to me in my '79 Camaro. Is it worse when its cold? Mine was. I was told by the man who rebuild the tranny, that was a symptom of a bad front pump. I don't really know if he was right, but I did run the tranny he built for me low on fluid because of a leak a few times and the tranny held together, so it would appear he knew what he was doing. I know its not much help, but it might be a clue.

You checked it with the engine running right? Fluid level reads higher than actual if the engine isn't running. Those are classic low fluid symptoms though. Possible you're due for a service, or the pump is starting to get weak but I wouldn't get too paranoid about it unless it gets worse.

It's a common problem with AOD's and the front pump gears being slowly destroyed by ballooning torque convertors (excellent idea, making a torque converter out of cheap stamped steel, isn't it?)....this is an obvious line pressure problem caused by either the front pump gears being worn down (ballooning convertors push the small pump gear against the pump case, and push the crankshaft forward), or the apply piston seals in the 1st gear clutch are almost baked to a crisp....or it could be a valve body problem, which wouldn't surprise me either.

It's approaching rebuild time, either way.

My car goes in gears fine. But if it's cold outside and I drive it as soon as it cranks up, it'll strain first gear out then skip second and go right into third. But if I let it warm up it's fine.
