    thermostat help

    my watertemp gauge was only getting up to about 150, so i bought a new thermostat. i see the upper radiator hose going into the housing, but what is the other little hose going into the housing? ive changed thermostats before but never seen 2 hoses... what is that

    that's the bypass hose

      Yep, bypass hose. It's what allows coolant to flow through the engine before the thermostat opens. With the thermostat closed, the coolant will flow through the engine, but not the radiator.

        so is a bunch of coolant going to spill out of that too?

          Some. Get a new one of those. You'll almost certainly rip it getting it off. They're a real pita to separate from the housing.

            got it taken care of. the bypass hose wasnt a problem. the lower bolt on the thermostat housing was a bitch to get off. engine is now steadily at 195 and the heat is a lot hotter.
