so grounding the self-test connector with the key on does not cause the pump to run, but jumping the relay makes the pump run? The only thing that I can explain that with is a failed fuel pump relay, or messed up wiring at the pump relay. I've seen the relay sockets crumble, and the wires fall out before. One of the relays in my car actually has a zip tie around it to hold the wire in place and I keep forgetting to get a new socket for it. The wiring from the fuel pump in the self test connector actually should go directly to the fuel pump relay, not back to the ecm. Pull the split loom back a bit to confirm that but I'm about 99% sure the wire goes from ECM to the self test connector, then from self test to the relay. Jumping that particular wire out totally takes the ECM out of the picture. You could actually unplug it from the car entirely with that wire jumped and the pump ought to run.

how much vacuum do you have? are you sure you dont have any leaks or a plugged pcv?

what do the plugs look like?

how old are the tuneup parts- mainly wires?

            how old is the fuel?

maybe check and see if the coil gets hot?

neutral safety switch prevents the engine from cranking except when in park or neutral.

ok well i went out to take it for a test drive it wont even move in drive and it makes a racket from underneath like a torque converter makes when the bolts are loose and eventuanlly stalls in drive. do you think this may be a torque converter problem?

no gadget it was the trans i replaced it and its fine. i think the problem inn the trans was the planetary gearset. man ive never seen an auto trans do that.

manuals can scatter gears too. I've heard of 2 or 3 AODs with broken planets. I blew a set up in my truck without even doing anything to it. I backed out of the driveway and it broke.
