    AOD transmission removal and installation - special tools

    The procedure of removal and installation of the transmission as described in shop manual is pretty clear, I would like just ask you about the necessity of any special tools. Concretely the shop manual mentions these:

    1) Shift Linkage Grommet Removal Tool T84AP-7341-A - to disconnect the manual rod from transmission manual lever at transmission;

    2) Cooler Line Disconnect Tool T86P-77265-AH - to disconnect oil cooler line from the fittings on the transmission; and

    3) Shift Linkage Grommet Installation Tool T84AP-7341-B - to connect the manual linkage rod to manual lever at transmission.

    Do I really need them or could it be substituted by some other regular tools?

    Thank you.

    The cooler line disconnect tools are the same as a fuel line disconnect. Those you do actually need. I'd also get new disconnect fittings since its almost guaranteed that the old ones will leak once you pull them apart.

    The others I used either a small prybar, or a door panel removal tool, which basically looks like a prybar with a notch cut in the middle of it. Putting it back on, use a pair of pliers to push it into position.

    Or, take a propane torch and melt the plastic grommet out, and just install a new one when you put it back together.

      Thanks. It will be done in a service (however not specialized for american cars) so I believe they should have the tools mentioned by you.

        A small socket (a little larger then the tapered side of the grommet) & a pair of large vice-grips will work to install the new bushing......
