    Idle problem

    Ok .....

My Crown Vic is all screwed up. The person that had the car before me has set the idle on the car very high to cover a problem with the car. When my mechanic realized how high the idle was and set it to 900 it wont run longer then 20 seconds. Also, if I put it in reverse or drive it will die. Does this sound like the Idle air control valve? or something else.

It sounds like to me, it's the EGR Valve. I had an old 84 that would idle werid and park, but when I put it in gear it would die. Just as soon as I took my foot of the gas it died. I had unplugged it and it didn't cut off anymore but it still didn't idle the best. They probably didn't fix it cause of the price. If I remember correctly mine was 80 bux.

You didn't describe how it's idling or what it does when it dies. When you shift it to drive it does it stumble before killing? What if you bump the throttle while it's idling?

but when you're pressing the gas it still runs shitty right? I'm still saying it's the EGR Valve. I would try unplugging that first to see if that makes a difference

It will stumble before dying in park. But in reverse it will just die when I take my foot off the gas. Before he lowered the idle, the car would start to jerk sometimes after about 20 minutes of driving on the street when i tried to accelerate. On the highway it ran like a champ until I got off and had to stop at lights and tried to accelerate again. Also after a short drive, the car wouldnt start unless I waited for like a hour. I made a mistake in the 1st post, It cuts off in reverse without stumbling, but shortly stumbles before dying in drive.Yes its a EFI 5.0

Have you checked it for codes? When was the last tuneup? Could very well be a vacuum leak, and a jammed open EGR valve is a big vac leak. It will set a code for that though. Incredibly crapped up plugs and fuel filter will make it run all sorts of crappy too.

Havent ran codes, but it has had new spark plugs, coil, cap and rotor and timing corrected within the last year. Had the car for 3 years now and I barely drive it. I pulled the green hose going to egr valve today and I didnt feel any vacuum coming from it when I put my finger to the hose. So im guessing its the egr. Well Im going to run to autozone tomorrow and pick one up. Hopefully this ends the problem.

You should not have vacuum to the egr valve at idle. If the valve itself is jammed, you wouldn't notice it by checking the vacuum line. Check for codes before putting parts on it, otherwise you'll be broke and still have a broken car.
