I think Best Buy has this on sale for $70 or so now, so if you wanna save some fuel money buy another one from there and then return this one

And Jan-Feb sounds good, as I'll be back from vacation in the middle of January.

alright, how much would it cost to have a differential installed as well?

Is it a full-out gear swap and limited-slip rebuild, or only gears (plus bearings), or just a limited-slip in place of an open carrier?

Alright, sounds like you have an open differential now, and you need a limited-slip or a locker. IIRC the rear axle in your car is a 10-bolt with a 7.5" (or thereabouts) ring gear diameter, the factory locker for this is the Eaton G80 which is known in the S10 and halfton circles to not be able to take much abuse before self-destruct. I'll ask around on my Chevy board, but I believe you may be better off with an aftermarket locker...

the factory lockers are non rebuildable so you need a new factory style unit or an aftermarket unit ($$$) on average the factory ones last around 100,000 miles. i have replaced a few of these units, a 91 firebird and a 94 impala ss come to mind.......what is the current gear ratio? do you wish to change the gears?

Scott, yes, I remembered they are non rebuildable, and I noticed Summit has the factory-style LSDs for the 7.5" axle and a Detroit locker for the 8.5"...

well, it depends what you think you need. If you need better off the line acceleration, you need a gear swap

So just a locker then - full-blown aftermarket units are quite pricey, and the factory units suck, I'll see if I can find you some new "lunchbox" locker for cheap...
