    Advance the cam ???

I have read in some other forums about people advancing their cams to get more power. I was just wondering if it would be worth it to advance the cam in my '96 explorer engine 4* to try and get some more torque.

    Thanks.

Not if it's the stock cam....

advancing/retarding the cam doesn't really make more power, it moves the powerband around. So you can tweak it to a more usable rpm.

dont forget about using premium gas, advancing it that much(gt-40 heads i assume)will require it to keep detonation down. Advancing it will give more low end power but you losetop end power. Complete opposite for retarding it

why would advancing the camshaft require higher octane fuel?

Advancing the Explorer cam probably wouldn't do you much good. It makes torque from a low enough RPM that moving it down won't do much. It will kill off the top end even faster though, and that you will probably notice.

no we're putting on our gt40p heads and weiand stealth intake with 600 carb.

ok thanks, thought i'd ask before doing more harm then good.

Since the Exploder cam is designed primarily for low end, I'd think you would want to retard it slightly, if anything.

Don't overlook the possibility of trying a 500cfm carb if you have one handy ... they work great.

that would actually be something interesting to run through DD, just to see what it does to the power curves. Might actually be something worth trying.

Tried it ... doesn't actually look all that much different. Exploder cam installed straight up peaks in DD at about 4000rpm with stock E7 heads. I'll have to see about maybe posting a couple of screenshots for comparison.

Did you try it with any other combinations of heads/compression ratio/etc. to see if there was any way of gaining an advantage with the retarded Exploder cam?

did any of you try retarding the cam to see how much of a difference it is?

You know, I don't think I ever got around to doing that. Someone try bugging me in a few days when I've got most of my brain back and I'll see if I can get around to it.

Cams are reversed from the distributor, in that retarding the cam raises the peak RPM and advancing the cam lowers the peak RPM.

I'm not sure if it would make much difference on a stock setup, though it should be noticeable. Whether it actually is an improvement is a whole separate debate.

I can say that on my Celica going from +4 degrees to -2 degrees was about 1200rpm change in peak RPM.
