    Alternator Belt Noise

88 Town Car 302 - First my alternator belt was squealing for a few seconds on the first cold start of the day, so I tightened it up slightly, and now the squeal is gone, but at idle there is now a whining noise. This may be a stupid question, but how do you know how tight to adjust the alternator belt? I did not tighten it that much at all .. thanks!

1 ft of belt between pulleys should not deflect more than an inch when you press it downward.

I make it tight enough that it doesn't make annoying shreiking sounds, however tight that ends up being.
