im putting true duel on my 88 and because im trying to save money i dont want to buy a brandnew H pipe. I tried the auto wreckers and they won't take one off for me. i was wondering could i just have a pipe from each manifold to the mufflers == no H . would it effect the E test? Thanks

I just did that and no problems at all. Milage went down a little tho but power went up a bit. But sounds great and i don't see any problems with running true duals. Finally have an on the books porting/custom fab business!

A crossover pipe, be it H or X, increases the efficiency of any dual exhaust system by balancing the pressure pulses between the two banks of cylinders. In the case of an H pipe, better low-end torque characteristics and fuel economy are frequently touted benefits, while a X pipe maintains these benefits at higher RPM ranges than an H allows. You may also experience decreased interior sound levels at low RPM.
I wonder why a scrapyard would refuse to sell you used exhaust parts? Some odd state or local regulation, I presume?
Also, what are you planning to have done at Midas? All you need for a quick and dirty home dual exhaust is to cut the original pipes in front of the Y pipe flanges, clamp on four 45 2.25" degree bends, and go from there. Still have all four original cats in place, no emissions concerns.Last edited by 1987cp; 08-13-2009, 09:20 AM.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

More low end torque. If you're having exhaust made, the exhaust shop can make you a crossover in about 10 minutes with a little welding. The one on my Mark VII was custom made on the car from two pre-bent pieces of pipe and a short crossover.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Yeah Midas does overcharge, my friend just put a new stock exhaust from the catback on his 93 Grand Caravan minus the muffler and they charged him $260 which was piping, hangers, welding and labor. I had more work done on my Sierra, custom exhaust made with larger piping and more welding and it only cost me $140 at a local shop, not a chain. Look for a small independent shop and have them weld in an H-pipe, I got mine done on my 86 Silverado for $30.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)

speaking of 'H' pipe
you guys know anything about CALIFORNIA rules about putting a dual exhaust on a single exhaust car
Now I hear that if your car came out of the factory single exhaust it must be single when you do a smog inspection. you fellas know if this is true?
Shit... I ask because I got talked out of putting a 'H' pipe on my Vic at the local exhaust shop1990 EFI Crown Vic Lxsigpic

You'd really have to ask someone who intimately knows Cali smog nazi laws. If its done using factory parts, I can't imagine it being an issue but who knows. I've heard of people failing for having the wrong year air cleaner lid, or just one that was different than the picture in their book.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
