when i took off plug #8, why is it that its so messed up? tons of build up on it and burnt up...? something to worry about or just normal wear and tear? all others looked the same except #8. any thoughts on this?

It's possible the #8 plug had never been changed before. It's not uncommon to find one or both rear plugs on these cars have never been changed since they're a bit of a pain in the hindquarters to remove and install.

It looks sort of like the plugs in my car (old engine) after about 3 months... Caused by oil from the leaking valve guide seals... I had the two on the front passeger side that would do that... Not a big problem until it starts puffing smoke when you start it up, or after it has been idling for a while, and you take off, and you look like the mosquito spraying truck... Mine had just started doing that... Another reason for a new engine in my car....

Both rear plugs on my car had build up similar to that.
My car burns no oil though (at least not yet anyways).

Mine didn't either... about 1/2 quart between oil changes... Guess it doesn't take much to foul the plugs....

I think from what I remember hearing the rear plugs are like that partly because of the way the engine sits tilted slightly back. Regardless, mine were like that as well. It's also nice to know I'm not the only dork that puts all the plugs together numbered and takes photos of them.:smirk:

pcv screen is clogged up, that's why #7 and #8 get oil deposits on the plugs

I had the same problem with the #7 plug on my old 305 sbc. My problem was the valve seals. Not a big problem; you just have to keep an eye on that plug. Now that you got pics of the parts, how about more pics of the whole car:p?

If the PCV stuff is in good shape, its the valve seals. The motor tilts backward so the rear cylinders get the most oil running around the guides. If the drainback holes are a bit restricted, and/or the seals are failing thats what you get. Nothing to really be concerned about, though I would make sure the PCV stuff is working as it should.
