    flywheel rattle

I pulled the inspection cover and noticed the flywheel moving forward enough to rub on the block plate after i start the engine.. has anyone experienced this before? I'm thinking i might have excessive end play at the crankshaft since I pulled on the harmonic balancer and could feel it move in and out..

Unfortunately I realized this after trying to bend out/tweak the block plate and made the rattle worse Now i dont know if the block plate/dust cover was bent somehow all along (and i made it worse) or if i really have excessive end play..

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOL

eek. That sounds like some serious problems. Are you sure the harmonic balancer surround wasn't just moving on the front?

Are all of the torque converter bolts tight? drain plug?

yup i'm super pissed right now..

I'm positive the balancer wasn't moving.. it was play in the entire crankshaft and i could see the flywheel move forward at the same time. I compared the play with my other car and this one is more excessive but i'm not sure what is acceptable..

I never noticed the rattle until the car heated up before, now that i tweaked the block plate like a dumb ass the noise is constant..

Sounds like some serious wear issues. Free endplay should be 0.004-0.008, service limit is 0.012.

thx for the info.. if its not the end play in the crank, i'm just gonna let it wear grooves into the fucker and forget about it.

pretty sure it's the thrust bearings.. crankshaft has excessive end play, which really sucks cuz it's the car i just bought.. seems to run fine yet though, and since i bent the plate back the rattle went away.

gonna be pulling the HO from my 86 soon.

Torque converter balooning is usually what eats those thrust bearings out. Seen it more than once, especally in cars that got run hard. The stock converters are kind of crappy in that respect. If its just the thrust bearing, its not so bad. Its a problem when it eats the thrust surface on the crankshaft. That usually can't be fixed.

i'm at a loss on the reason, the car only has 108,000 miles on it and pretty sure it wasn't beat on.. i could replace the thrust bearing (if its even possible without pulling the engine) but i'm not sure i wanna risk having it happen again because of some other issue..

so what do you guys think?? is it worth the ache and pains to pull the pan and fight with the bearing?? it makes no noise, gets 25 mpg, and runs quite good despite the crank problem.. or should i pull the HO conversion from my 86 and work on this one out of the car?

Thrust bearing is dead center of the motor, I would imagine it being a total bitch to replace with the motor in the car. I'd also be a bit worried about the crank possibly needing work. If its not making noise or causing you any problem, just drive it.
