Ooh, no shipping cost = good, as is complete. I wouldn't mind playing with it!

I'm somewhat discouraged that the adapters I'm coming up with all seem to be of aluminium: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G1401/

Please note: The 'cracking' I'm referring to causes the bowl to drain overnight, it's not something that will puke gallons of fuel into the engine as it idles....and it's repairable with epoxy from underneath.

Concerning aluminum spacers....that's actually what you should be looking for....just remember to take a large flat metal file to it after you get it, to ensure that it's actually flat....

Ah, the one I had that issue with would dump the contents of the bowl in about 1 minute. It didn't cause idle problems, which I thought was strange but warm starts were a bitch, and it smelled gassy all the time. Cold starts were OK and it ran just fine though.

              :bump:

Found a specimen of the 400cfm Carter floating around eBay. If the lister's description is correct and it really is a 9400, this could be something I'd be very interested in trying on my milder 5.0. (E7 heads, Explorer cam, E4 manifold) Starting price looks very good ... be interesting to see where it goes from there.

Among those who have purchased and rebuilt ancient carburetors in essentially unknown condition, are there any major red flags I should watch out for? This thing should be identical to an Edelbrock 1403 but with smaller secondaries, so figuring out its tuning requirements should be a cinch, but so far I've only ever run carbs I'd bought new or that came with a vehicle, so I have nightmarish visions of worn-out throttle-shaft bores in need of bushing, internal vacuum passages or air bleeds solidly crammed with crud, or other related issues.

yeah, pretty much all of those are a point of concern. Unfortunately without seeing it, you're not going to know until after its paid for.

Hm. Well, I guess all I can do is ask the seller a few questions. And hope it sells for very cheap!

I just realized something rather obvious. Even if this 400cfm Carter 9400 turns out to be junk, I can probably at least steal the primary boosters, which seem to be basically impossible to purchase separately. Those should be the same as on an Edelbrock 1403/4, which are in turn the only real difference in a 1404 and a 1406 .... thus allowing me to turn my spare 600cfm 1406 main body into a 500cfm 1404! Squirters may well be 1404 size as well.

Actually, even if it turns out I can run the 9400 as a 9400 after a basic rebuild, it'll be very nice to have the option of creating an extra 1404 via the aforementioned method if I find 100 extra horsepower out of the aether and want a little more airflow.

Argh ... I've been outbid ...... currently at $31 for a junky old carburetor that's hard to come by. Now, let's see ... am I really willing to spend more than that?

Well, dagnabbit, watching that carb for the last few minutes I was witness to one of those silly bidding wars that are getting all too common on eBay (or "EvilBay" as Ivan likes to call it). Saw it shoot from $26 to $41 to $52 to $67 to $86!!! So yeah, I lost out, but on the good side, I don't have to put out any money for the time being.

                            What does IOGTLTT stand for?
