    starter clicks

    Dear Panthers,
A few times recently occurring more often I hear a series of clicks when I turn the ignition to start. Sounds just like a failing coil but I don't think my 89 CP has a coil. Starter?

make sure youre battery connects aren't loose first off,or its not drained. or check the ignition solenoid on the passenger fender

Any time I've heard a "series of clicks" it's just a low battery or bad battery connections. Not *quite* enough juice to hold the starter solenoid closed.

There is a starter relay, and the starter itself that could be a problem. COuld also be connections at the starter or the relay. I don't remember if your car has the newer starter on it or not, but if it does, there is a small wire in addition to the large wire at the starter. If the small wire has a bad connection, it will make it just click.

i just went through the same thing. when it does this, tap the starter with a bar then start it up. this will tell you that you need to put in a new starter when the tap get it to start for ya. Your selinoid is working ( the clicking) but the starter sais no thanks, so all you get is the click. new starter.

                my guess is a corroded + terminal/cable.

i've seen them appear ok but once you cut the ends off and redo them you find out otherwise..

yea i put a new style starter in the car
the heavy wire goes from the hot side of the solenoid to the hot terminal on the starter
the smaller wire goes from the switched side of the solenoid to the soleniod on the starter......the heavy wire will be hot at all times, the smaller wire is hot when the key is put in the start position......if power is good, then the started died......that irratates me, because that starter was not cheap
