Quite true. On a stock motor, the manifolds really aren't a big choke point. Its the stuff behind the converter thats a bigger issue. The flange at the back of the converter is 2" go a few inches forward and you're looking at 2 1/4" pipe. If the whole exhaust was done in 2 1/4, it would wake things up a fair bit. Just adding a header to stock exhaust does basically nothing.

That is pretty weird about it being 2.25" at the back of the converters. That's where I hooked up my first dual-muffler system in 2.25".

The front part of the exhaust isn't really a major problem. Its the huge restrictive muffler and the smallish tailpipe(s) with the goofy kinky bends that choke things down. If you made up a 2.25" H and tailpipe set, and used mufflers that don't suck it should work just fine.

So the stock tailpipe(s) are restrictive? I can't imagine how poorly my old stock single exhaust must have been, I bet no mufflers and an H-pipe would have been so much better, forget tails just run the pipes in front of the rear tires.

Apparently exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheels is illegal in some areas ... that would be some people's motive for installing tailpipes no matter what.

Ever seen the bends in one of those exhaust pipes? Its the loopty-loo over the axle and that immediate 90 into the muffler that really screws things up. The stock mufflers are lousy, and with a single exhaust you're pumping a lot of exhaust through not a lot of pipe. THats why the dual exhaust cars make 10 hp more per factory literature, and the stock duals are really not that special.
