Converting to Carb

MSD is great but overpriced. The Accel HEI in my Silverado has never let me down, come to thing of it neither has any other part of it but it will if I don't fine tune the carb. I just need to get me some junker that runs, and get me a few different types of carbs to figure out how to rebuild and tune them.
Up until recently my Edelbrock Performer 1405 has been an awesome carb that even in winter I didn't have to touch and it fired up with 2 pumps of the throttle and ran perfect.88 Town Car (wrecked, for sale)

Oh, and another note: Since you're swapping out to a duraspark distributor, order up a Mr. Gasket 925D ignition advance curve kit....and install the lightest springs (should be the black springs, but verify in the instructions) and heaviest weights. This brings in full mechanical advance around 2000 rpm, which what is needed in an auto-equipped vehicle....

I still want you to hook the tweecer up even if you're dead set on going to a carb. I want to know why it does what it does.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

(I can triple check, but I'm all but positive this is the same kit I bought, and it definitely contained what they say it contains)2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

Oh yeah, the car runs slightly less retarded now. My next project is getting the ECM back out and putting the TwEECer to it. Judging by how it's been running (better than it was) I have hope. One of the things I can do with the tweecer is get that full advance in there by 2000 rpm...1983 Grand Marquis 2Dr Sedan "Mercules"

Get the 929G kit instead. This is the kit I've been using in Ford Duraspark distributors for almost a couple of decades now, since they're always in parts stores....but I've hesitated to mention it since it's a 'Chevy' kit. I thought the 925D had the full range of springs and weights, also....
And by the way, Tom? If you are going to switch to the road Demon, make sure you get the regular Road Demon 525, and not the Road Demon JR. The 'Junior' doesn't have a metering block on the secondary side of the carburetor, it comes instead with that dumb assed metering plate, making it the world's most expensive Holley 1850.
By the way....after doing some thinking about it....I'm shitcanning the EFI on the T-bird, whether or not Tom goes through with his swap. I have a different carb idea in mind that Tom does....but to be perfectly honest with you, I'm really wanting to keep this car simple, and unclutter the engine compartment. And if it's not a daily driver, then who cares about losing a MPG or two?Last edited by Guest; 06-02-2009, 01:52 AM.

Again, I don't mean to hypercriticize, but while the springs may well work (and there don't seem to be a lot of options for those), those appear to be HEI advance weights and bushings.
Duraspark weights are these funny near-triangular things and they use no bushings (26/36 degree advance limiter shown):

Use the springs only from the 929G kit.

The car has still got a mind of it's own. Better now, but still pisses me off.
Now I am going to explore my options for fuel delivery. Was considering keeping the stock pump/relay and running an aeromotive return style regulator. Opinions?1983 Grand Marquis 2Dr Sedan "Mercules"

Toggle switch. Or just make it go hot with the key. Ditching EFI is a great idea.1989 Grand Marquis LS

Triggering the relay is actually not that hard. The relay is part of the ECM harness, but if you insist on doing this I can draft up a wiring diagram of how to run an EFI pump with no ECM. The hardest part of it would be figuring out which pin in the connector is the one back to the pump. The rest of it is pie. (and no, I still don't like carbs)86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
