    How to bend Pushrods/Valves.

Push a little car beyond its limits

and this is my cousin/uncles 1977 Mustang II 302/4 speed

This is what my cousin did on his first day back from the Army.

from his story he was "just going around the corner"...but i was with him so he also tried to blame me and say i did it lol.

this engine is toast, bent all the intake valves/pushrods, if it didnt have the valve relief cuts in the piston they would have definatley been broke.
you can see where the vlave hit the piston, the shiny parts, the timing chain jumped 2 teeth, we think thats where things went bad.

but like my uncle said, after cussing my cousin out, "this is a good reason to finally put together that 347 stroker thats been sitting on the shelf" haha

    enjoy the sad pics lol

+1. My Dad put some really old gas in his station wagon one time (350 Olds engine), and it stuck the valves, and bent the pushrods. The pushrods were very, very bent.

Nice project. I never really liked the Mustang IIs. Though I really like the paint on your cousin's Mustang.

Looks like someone didn't change the oil very regularly. I'd also agree that the chain jumping was your initial problem. If that was an original chain, it was probably one of those plastic toothed POS things that don't hold up so well anyway.

accually, my uncle just changed the oil a few months ago...for the first time... in the 4 years he's owned it, and the car sat before that since the late 80's lol. yea, he's kinda dumb lol.

he only changed the oil because he switched intakes, and this engine has never been apart since 1977, so its all, old, worn out, crappy, etc. lol

but do u think this was a plastic timing chain ??? i didnt think they had those that long ago, i know my merc had one tho.

Late 70s? Yeah probably plastic teeth. Could be a single roller metal, those also would stretch enough to jump, especially if it was being beat on.

they started with the plastic teeth in the early 70's

Presumably because it's theoretically a bit quieter. I don't have any noise complaints on my stuff, though, and it all uses solid metal timing gears.

Lincolns already had them in the early 60's. All for a little extra quite that no one could hear.

Yep, entirely for noise reasons. The gears aren't totally plastic, but they do have a nylon coating over the teeth to make it quieter. Unfortunately when the plastic chunks off, it makes the timing chain really sloppy. Add to that the stretch they develop over time from running, and its like a jumprope flopping around under the timing cover.

probably plastic toothed metal gears. Every 85 and older Vic I've seen has one, usually shot by 80k or so.
