Nice to know that one of the heavy hitters on this site will back me up on it not being crap oil.

I just switched from the Walmart 10-30 synthetic to the Rotella 5-40 synthetic in the CP because it started to use about 1.5 quarts between 5k changes. With the Rotella, if I put 5 quarts in the valve cover, I get 5 quarts out the drain plug after 5k miles. It's a good thing.

Another reason I like the 5-40 Rotella synthetic. A friend of mine has a 95 Audi s6 with the AAN engine. This means 2.2l 5-cylinder inline with a turbo running huge amounts of boost. From the factory, these cars used a fair amount of oil and it was expected. At 156k, using Mobil 1 0-40, oil consumption was half a quart every thousand miles. With Rotella, it no longer uses any oil between 5k changes.

Walmart outsources their oil. From what I understand, it used to be Mobil, now its Kendall. I would be interested in seeing an actual scientific analysis of their oil compared to others to see just how good or bad it is. It might be total shit, who knows. I certainly don't claim to know enough about oil to determine that. All I know is that I change my oil probably more frequently than absolutely neccesary, and anything I've owned that I've pulled the motor apart later on has been clean inside. I don't know how much of that has to do with the 3k change intervals, how much is the filter, and how much is the oil.

Rotella is good stuff. I use it in my marine motors. It didn't do anything useful for the oil burning the really tired motors had, but its rated for severe duty which pretty accurately describes marine life. I've had those open before, and they were clean inside.

I tried the Wal-Mart synthetic oil for a couple of changes in my '89 back when I was still driving it. It seemed all right, but I went a little long on one change (about 6 or 7k as I recall), and evidently the stuff started to thin out, because the oil pressure dropped off quite noticeably. I switched back to Mobil 1 after that, because it's never made that problem. Changing it at 3-4k, you're probably fine, but I wouldn't go much further than that.
