This is just some interesting bit of info that I thought I would mention. I had been using Pennzoil 10W-30 High Mileage dinosaur oil in my '88 Lincoln TC and I decided to use the Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 10W-30 on this oil change. Immediately, and all throughout the day idling and driving the car, it is smoother, the valve tapping noise I always has before is now GONE, and acceleration is a bit more brisk. I don't know if this will happen with everyone who tries this, but I am very impressed with using Synthetic oil in this car, it really cleared up the engine. Just my two cents I wanted to share!

Pennzoil... not what I'd call quality oil.
Full synthetic is great though, the difference is amazing! I went from Valvoline Maxlife to Castrol Syntec in my Beretta, and honestly it felt like it took about 60k off that motor.
The best Synthetics are Lucas, Royal Purple, and Amsoil. We recently started carrying Lucas Synthetic motor oil at AutoZone, so I'll be using this instead of the Castrol Syntec.
Oh yea, run a good filter if you're running synthetic. Don't run a cheap-o. Synthetic cleans out the motor real good, you want the filter to catch as much of the junk as it can.1984 Ford Crown Vic LTD, The Murphmobile (RIP)

Synthetic is great, some people say its not a good idea to switch over but I've had no issues in over 7 years. I use Mobil One. I used to add in a quart of Lucas but skipped it the last 2-3 changes.sigpic

Wow, I had never heard of Pennzoil being a bad brand. I only use Mobil 1 in my newer Lincoln, and usually Pennzoil in my 88 Town Car, never had any kind of issues. I have never seen Royal Purple at any store around here, but I have heard many good things about it. Maybe Mobil 1 on my next oil change for the Town Car? I always use the K&N oil filters as well.

I honestly believe the filter matters just as much if not more than the oil. I use only amsoil oil filters and even though they're expensive, I believe they're worth it.
My father has a 1998 caravan with the 3.8l motor, and I have run the Wal-Mart 10w-30 synthetic and amsoil filters in it since it was new, and I have yet to see it ever smoke. It now has 250k miles on the motor. These engines are notorious for burning copious amounts of oil at high mileage--just take a look around sometime when you're on the road. But not mine. This one uses no oil between 5k changes.Originally posted by gadget73There is nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.

back in the olden day, yes pennziol had issues, almost any oil these days is fine.
Synthetics have a lot of cleaning agents, and if the car wasn't too well maintained it will make a big difference.
The high dollar synthetics like RP are a waste...don't need it in a stock car. I run M1 synthetic in the daily driver, and enjoy the 8-10k mile oil changes.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

I also have a 92 toyota corolla with 114K miles on it...the old oil in it was a blend...and i recently changed the oil with regular motor oil, it seems a little less smooth, im wondering now if i should switch over, im just afraid of leaks creeping up, but you can always go back to regular oil correct?-Phil
