    Help - Starter?

Well, I got in my 1989 colony park, turned the key and just get one "click" sound and then a "whirring" noise. Battery has juice, lights and radio work.

Was having no issues with starting prior to this. Problem came on suddenly.

I'm thinking that the starter died? Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

Yip, as it turns out, it was the starter. Replaced it and all is good.

Starter drive probably decided to self destruct.

I've seen damage like that, but it was on diesel engines, like the diesels in front end loaders and shit. Sucker let go good lol

Usually they don't explode quite that bad. I've seen GM starters with dead bendix drives though. Same symptoms, click-whirrrrrrrrrr

She is my daily driver. I hope to driver though next winter. If she wasn't such a rust bucket, I would consider restoring her (if I had the cash).

I'll get some pictures of the under-body next time she's on a lift.

Mine did the same last week. It's the original starter and always been a fast cranker. Bought a drive and took the starter off. Took off the top cover and the actual lever that kicks the starter drive out was broken. Welded that SOB and she's working fine!
