    Roller Lifters

What keeps our roller lifters from spinning around in their bores?

There is a plate that keeps them in the right position, sort of like a stud girdle....

Here is a picture of an after market (Crane Cams) spider plate, that keeps all the the lifters in the right direction.... The regular spider plates are probably a little different, but I can't find a picture of one... We are getting ready to replace the roller lifters in my car.,.. I'll get pictures when we do....

I thought the ford ones were slightly heavier but that looks pretty close that the one i remember from around 3 years ago.

that's a ford retainer... crane's retro kit used stock ford bieces with special bolts to mount it to the galley. it's a thin spring steel with little dogbones the go on the pairs of lifters.

A few of us have always wondered if you can convert a non-roller block to a roller block using the spider and tapping holes/bolts into the block, but noone I know of has tried it.

the dog bones keep them from rotating

Alright, I see. I forgot that I used to see the Ford Racing conversion kits in Summit. Will the 5.0L conversion kit fit a 351W? Assuming that I can't find the F4TE block.

351 is wider, so no. Should be the same dogbones, but the spider is different

Really? The distance between the tops of the lifter bores should be the critical dimension, and that ought to be the same (same lifers, same angle).

There's also the fact that both Ford Motorsport and Comp Cams list the same part number retainer kit for both engines ........

I've heard a rumor from a Corral.net member that a stock roller cam CAN be used with stock roller lifters and the stock lifter retainer system (i.e. "dogbones" and "spider") in a nonroller block. More official advice is, of course, that in order to safely use stock-style roller lifters and retainers in a nonroller block, one must use one of Comp's special reduced-base-circle hydraulic-roller conversion camshafts such as the 35-421-8, and otherwise it is more advisable to obtain link-bar lifters. I had intended to try to verify the Corral member's claim a few weeks ago, but discovered I couldn't find my new-in-box 5.0 lifters.
