Good advice. My '88 GM and '89 Mustang both read overfull with 5 quarts in the pan. I scribed the other side of the dipstick and called it good.

That makes sense, I know I only put 5 quarts in.

My 89 is the same fill it with 5 qts and it is over the full mark. I have had it changed at the Ford dealer and it comes out over the full mark from them too.

              From what I've seen:
              '79-87 Dipsticks are correct
'88 and '89 Dipsticks are off by a quart (they read a quart high when you put in five quarts)

The low mark is the same, the high is off. I swaped the between my '87 (sorry LTDMan83) and '88 so I could have a good dipstick in the car I drive the most.

HAHAHA, I noticed that dipstick had different markings on it, from the original '79 to '87 dipsticks that I have seen. I just figured it was probibly from a truck 302.

I replaced it, and It now lives in my Merc's HO engine, which only takes 4 1/4qts to be correctly full, so it actually is right for that particular engine, lol.

HO motors take 5 quarts with a filter change, same as a lopo. Ignore the dipstick, just put the right amount of oil in there and make a new scratch mark on the stick.

This one actually does take 4 1/4qts, as it has a custom Oil Pan. Someone dented in the rear sump of the pan with a floor jack, removing a little over .75 of its capacity. It doesn't leak, and the drain plug is fine, so I'm not really worried about it. The 88+ dipstick just happened to match this oil pans "modified" capacity, lol.
