yes the c4 was mainly used on small blocks..........mostly compact cars..........the fmx was popular in the 70's. every cougar i ever owned had a fmx trans lol..........they used the c4's on the lighter stripped down models i think........ie: my base 79 t-bird, and my buddys base 78 cougar, had c4's............the 351m and 400 cars usually had c6's (big block bell)
somebody use a fmx in a box......those things are indestructible........i have never had one go bad, ever!...........lots of c4 and aod failures lol and chrysler 727-904's too. u guys chicken to install a cast iron automatic tranny?hehe.....ok enough 70's cars story telling now..............and i realized the other day that my helper at the shop wasnt even born yet when i started driving........damm i'm old lol

C4 is decently tough, but C6 is teh win. I'd probably not go back to a 3 speed tranny in a daily driver tho. Too many r's on the highway unless i used a tall rear which sucks for low end.

SB C-6's bolt right up. You just need a C-6 flexplate and a shorter driveshaft.

well. i got my C4 from our good buddy Stu ya know, and it was sittin around so i figured id have it rebuilt instead of wasting time pulling it out and puttin it in 100 times. so yea, had a hell of a time finding a dipstick tube for it.... cause it goes into the pan, not the case. eric tells me its a HD version, or maybe a C5. either way, thats a good thing. My parents neighbor is a transmission shop tech, he wants to help, so he is gonna rebuild it for nothing! $100 for parts, including a shift kit, and ill probably throw him $100 for doing it. In any case, i should have the tranny bolted up and the car burnin the tires sunday. cant wait! been down for a week now.... 3 speed action here i come!

Just so you know a C5 is not a heavy duty version. They only came behind I6 fairmonts & V6 bronoc IIs. Neither or which were as heavy or powerful.

I still say you'd be better off with a rebuilt beefed up AOD. It'll fit, you won't have to worry about a kickdown linkage, and OD is teh win.

yea yea i know, OD this and OD that. Id love to have a good tranny with OD.... the AOD was a crappy way to compete with the 700R4. i hate GM but that is a good tranny. C4 is going in for now.... probably next step will either be a C6 or a manual. I need the input shaft, a torque convertor, and need to relocate my crossmember.... my bracket on my frame does NOT have the forward holes... so i gotta get something welded. so the car is down for another week or so. but while its down, i gutted the a/c out, fixed a hole in the floor, and maybe ill set some racing buckets in it and prepare it for a floor shifter. in the mean time... ive got my new ride... my sisters old car... 1989 Cougar v6, for $200. its a pile of crap, runs good but cosmetically its falling apart. i think ill fix it up a little and keep it.
