EFI 5.0L to EFI 5.8L Swap.

I believe that I might be able to pull off this swap w/o having to use a hood scoop. I will use this thread for whatever questions may arise for this swap. I have been slowly breaking my father down to the idea of this swap to the point where he he says that when the money is right, I can do it. Off of the bat my first question would be throttle linkage related. Lightning engines were pointed in the right direction which is good, but will I have to fab' some sort of throttle cable bracket or modify the Lightning and/or the stock lopo bracket? Or should I go aftermarket (Lokar)? The only reason I ask this is because I had problems with Ford Racing valve covers and the throttle linkage bracket on the lopo.

This swap probably won't haappen anytime soon, but I would like to be prepared anyways just in case good fortune should smile upon me.

There was a fairly long thread on this a while back with a lot of ideas and info being chucked around, you might want to see if you can dig it up.

The stock lopo bracket bolts to a lightning egr spacer with no issue. it uses studs instead of bolts but thats trivial. I have a lightning egr on my car with the original stock throttle cable bracket. I'm using a spacer under the upper for clearance, and my valve covers are now actually fairly low profile, probably it doesn't even need that 3/8" spacer but I don't feel like removing it either.

I think I started a thread on this swap over a year ago right B4 gas prices skyrocketed. It was at that time that my father told me to scrap that idea. I've been slowly working on him ever since. The biggest hang up that there seemed to be was having to cut a hole in a CV hood for the scoop. At first this didn't seem like a problem, but I soon realized that it would be because my mom is fairly short. After talking with a guy on CVN, he said they did this swap on a police cruiser back in the '90s and they fit the Lightning engine under the stock CV hood. So now this swap is back on the drawing board.

I think it can be easily done. Just not with the ideal intake. A small box type setup would be shorter than stock. Tall valve covers, for looks are not going to help anything. Stock short ones are what you want. you could also make custom motor mounts to drop the motor a slight bit.

As for linkage, that's been answered....

A true Lightning/FRPP GT40 Intake will clear the hood.

It's like an Explorer/Cobra intake, but made of separate pieces of tubing.

I've seen these intakes at swap meets, but at those times I wasn't sure about doing this swap. I think I will start purchasing the necessary parts for the 5.8L.

The upper intake is the same. The Difference is in the lower - you need a 5.8 specific one, those are hard to find, and when you do they are usually very expensive.

same with the lightning egr spacer which all the linkage mounts to. finding a complete motor would be a big help.

there are other options that you have to just make the parts from egr blockoffs and other mustang parts.

the 351 gt40s are going to cost about 600 for the u/l pair.

At that point it'd probably be better to get a complete intake from Trick Flow, no?

Clearance is the concern. The Lightning part is fairly low profile. If an aftermarket one exists that will have the same or less installed height, and is reversible you're in good shape.

Marine 351 lowers are slightly less expensive, however they are cast iron and most people don't want an iron intake due to the weight. It will bolt to a gt40 upper though.

Just in case you could stumble across one....a lightning lower and 94-95 Cobra upper would be a nice, low intake setup. it would be a couple of inches lower than Heretic's intake...

Heretic's is the one that used that weird adapter to mate a Cobra upper to a regular 5.8 truck lower, right?

Actually, I have a true Lightning intake. I still have to broomstick-mod & flip the valve covers to get the oil fill to clear and clean up the block still. It's getting there.
