    Trans crap

    So my tranny is elevating its level of stupidity. I went outside this morning to go check the fluid level as it was acting odd last night. So I start it up and put it in revers to go put it in the garage.....It engages but does nothing. Then I push the gas it lurtches back and then foward, then back again. It continues to act pretty damn stupid untill it warms up. Once it warms up the only issue I have is when I come to a stop at a light ore something it doesn't want to drop out of 3rd, and sometimes it will stay 2nd even for the takeoff.

    So I'm going to put some Slick50 in it and see if that helps, if not I really don't feel like working inside of my tranny again. I'll prolly just go get a new wide ratio trans that is already built up, and has a warranty. I've seen them as low as $900, with a 12month/10,000miles warranty, new. Maybe I can find that again. I'll let you all know how the slick50 does in it either way.

    Oh, P.S. the fluid level is perfect.

      Well, I'm sure that it's one of two things. 1 a valve body leaking. 2 sticky governor. I just want it to last another year. And I'll buy a new one

        AOD=DOA
        That is really wierd, when my trans died I had no reverse at all and when in neutral it went forward. Drop the trans pan and take a look at your fluid. If it has a black greasy flim, That is your friction material off your clutches.
        Hopefully next weekend, I'll be swaping my trans for a used one while I rebuild the old one.
        Yeah let me know if slick50 helps at all.

          Nah man, I know my tranny. I did the reduild last August myself. It's all good as far as clutches and clean fluid. When i did it I upgraded the pan to one with a drain plug and I added a ring magnet to it to gather all the metal shavings so that the fluid life span is longer. I keep tabs on things like that and change my fluid every 20,000 miles, now that I have a drain plug.

          ....What happened to cause the rebuild?
          See, I burnt up my direct clutch (thats the one in the very back just past the planetary gear, I think) pack up after I hit the 235,000 mile mark on the fully original trans. So I did the rebuild on it where you replace all the seals, clutches, bands and some valve body spring updates. Put it all back together and it wasn't working right. Checked it out for a bit and in the confusion I ran out of time to work on it. So I had to go to school, and my dad finished it for me. (Thanks Dad!! ) Well in his diagnostics he used a valve body from another AOD we had, but it hadn't been used for years. The end result was a sticky governor. So cleaned that up and put it back in, and it worked, OK. Clean shifts and a little on the firm side. I was "OK" with it because it would hold the gears on downshifts too long. But it worked and drove fine. It's just getting dumber now. I feel that it's a valve body seal issue. Where it's not making a good solid seal against the tranny body. It goes away when it's warm, and then it's just the holding gears on the downshift issue. Most likely do to the fact that the valve body had been on a different tranny for the last 18 years. I just sadly don't have the time or motivation at this point in my present life to spend a few days working on it. Maybe before the meet I'll replace the governor for GP.

          I'm adding the Slick50 this tuesday, because I'm a broke MOFO and I am getting my first scholarship pay this tuesday!! YEAH!!

                Dear Gurus,
                My 89 colony park seems to need transmission work every thirty thousand or so. Last one was a broke overdrive, latest (yesterday) a slipping OD. bechanic told e: "It's a heavy car. There's lots of mountains here.
                True, but I usually downshift. Is there any way to get more mileage out of it? Any possible AOD replacement?

                  Increase the TV cable pressure. By doing this you'll get harder shifts, and if will hold longer, but it will hold the clutches better, and not wear out so fast. Guy X "it's a heavy car" full of crap. I've got a heavy car too. My original trans ran 230,000 miles before its frist overhaul. And 80,000miles of that is with an engine with about 50 more HP. And it had never had a really smooth driver in it.
