    gt-40 intake

Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic. Wanting to learn but I'm finding alot of things over my head. I know the basic engine parts, and I am fairly up to speed on available ford parts. (Months of drooling at summit)

I cant decide wither to do some budget upgrades to my 302, or build a budget 351. I wouldn't do the lower end, and the top end parts would come in so slow (fundage) that I think I could get by with the help of my mechanic buddies.

I found aluminum gt-40x for 1000/pair, Im planning on those headers either way I go. Open for better suggestions but Im not spending more than a thousand dollars. Alot less would be better.

Fuel Injection confuses me, if I was to build a 351 it would be carbed. If I keep the 302 Im going to upgrade my plenum and intake. I found a gt-40 intake upper and lower for 100 dollars on craigslist. I need to buy headers/exsaust before anything, but might go ahead and grab the steal while I can. What can I plan on needing/doing when i upgrade my intake and heads?

I have a gently used 1991 Crown Victoria LX btw. Both my trip and my odometer quit on me. Where can I get a 140 mph speedo?

Yay plastic gears. Look on ebay, you might get lucky enough to find one. Some show up around here sometimes. And lastly, junkyards.

is it a true GT40 or someone saying an explorer intake is a GT40? Either way 100 bucks is a great deal. However, it's not going to help the motor unless you do an HO coversion (heads, injectors, cam etc) Tossing that intake on a lopo will give poor results.

Upon investigation its an explorer intake.

There are two different Explorer intakes. One has an internal EGR passage, and is generally more desired for people that have to go through smog. The other has no internal passage. Count the holes between the upper and lower intake. 8 holes has no internal EGR, 9 holes has internal EGR. If you don't have smog checks, then it doesnt matter much. The internal EGR intake is somewhat more desirable and worth a bit more.

Also I'd suggest maybe a set of AFR heads instead of those Ford heads. They perform a fair bit better from what I hear.

Thanks for the info. Ive thought about afr's and I might but Im trying to draw a line with myself as far as money goes...still might go with them, but right now Im not wanting to spend over a thousand on heads.

used AFR heads can probably be had for under a grand. Shop around on corral.net, lots of good deals to be had if you're patient. I'm a big fan of used parts, mostly because I'm cheap / poor.

Thanks for the advice. I do think I am going shop for some afr heads. I ended up buying an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake for $250, I even got the guy to throw in a pair of rusty bbk shorty headers in for free.
