    Smog Pump Repair

    Hi All,

My smog pump started making noises so i removed it and am running the A/C with a shorter belt for now. (91 GM 5.0 engine, 217K miles).

What I want to do is repair the smog pump and put it back. I'm thinking new bearings, etc..

Does anyone have any info to help me with this?? How to take the cover off behing the pulley, etc..?

    Thanks in advance,

What kind of noise is it making? Is it seized? My dad had that happen to him on the F100, burnt that belt up as if it was doing a burnout. White smoke everywhere lol.

Buy a new one. They're not that much. You're going to need to swap your pulley on to the new one, that and I think the little hose fittings as well.

I have had several of them appart. The trick is to drive the locating pins out then unbolt the rear cover. You need a small puller to remove the front. From what I have usually found is the rear bearing is real big and needs greased in most cases and the front is not the issue.

is this even a needed part? seemed like the car would run better without the extra drag. unless your worried about the enviroment or something. id probably just invest in an idler pulley

I remove and discard these things. THey're not neccesary, just have to cap off the lines that went to them. My car sounded like space aliens landing when the pump was on it. I took it off and removed the leaky vacuum lines and it ran much better. Its been gone for years now, and passes emissions with flying colors.

It may just be me, but I really don't think half of the people doing the inspections have a clue what a smog pump is on the older cars, at least in NJ. My car is like a unicorn in those inspection bays. They just check for cats with the mirror, gas cap, sniffer, treadmill, brakes, lights, suspension and that's pretty much it.

Now... if one more SOB lets my door just swing open there may be situation.

You could get an idler, but it's far easier to just get a shorter A/C belt.
