Actually, I just checked the cross reference on the motorcraft oil filters... and it doesn't appear to fit the 5.0 V-8 engines... I tried another motorcraft filter, (Can't remember the number) other than the FL-1 that was supposed to help with start up... but it still did it... Will the FL-400 fit the 5,0? If so, i may try that one....

went up to Advance right before the closed... they had the FL-400 S in stock, I compared it to the FL-1.. other than being a lot smaller in size, it looks like it will fit on the engine... Will the smaller filter make a difference? I change my oil every 2500 miles... so filtering changes shouldn't be that big of a deal... I just don't want to starve the engine of oil and make it worse....

And Tom, I'll try the Restore 8 cylinder stuff next oil change (Next week when I get paid)

BUT... I'm STILL going to get a new engine soon!!! I want to feel what it is like to have a brand new running 1991 Crown Vic!!!!

The FL300 is the one usually used on oil cooler equipped cars. No difference other than size as far as I know. I know nothing of an FL400.

The knock in the bottom end us usually main bearings, probably a combination of the thrust bearing in the center and #4 main. It has something to do with the firing order beating that bearing up. The thrust bearing wears because the torque converters swell up and shove the crank forward. Not much to be done for it other than a crank kit and/or changing the firing order. HO and 351 engines don't have this problem due to the different firing order they use.

Fl400 Is smaller, filters just as good if you change the oil regularly and fills up much quicker since its smaller. Crosses to an escort I think. Fits great Ive been using them for years. I think the pressure relief valve is different as well. I know a lot of 302 rattle when after an oil change if you run the fl1a and with the fl400 Ive only heard it happen once in 20 or 30 oil changes.
