does it sound like a sewing machine? could be an exhaust leak or depending on how loud it is you may be hearing the injectors pulsing, or valvetrain noise.
my car does the same thing and so does one of my friends mustang gt's, sometimes i hear it and sometimes i dont.. I've learned to live with it.Give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will promptly forget that he once did not know, and proceed to call anyone who asks, a n00b and flame them on the boards for being stupid.

Rod issues do not make ticking sounds, its more of a hollow knocking. If it threw, it would probably have ventilated the block and made a horrible sound while doing it. Exhaust leak sounds quite likely.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

What they said. That smog crossover tube on the back of the heads likes to rust and cause a little leak. Could also be exhaust.
My '82 had sporatic valvetrain noise. If you don't see any exhaust or smog leaks, take a wooden stick and listen to the valve covers. If it's valvetrain noise, you'll certainly here it there.1990 Country Squire - under restoration
