    New Exhaust System?

How much should I expect to pay for a mechanic to put a new exhaust system on my 86 Mercury Grand Marquis? Nothing fancy, just...a replacement unit?

    Thanks.

Around 150 or so is the average. Subtract about 10-20 if you want a glasspack. Add about 75-100 if you want duals.

How much of the system needs to be replaced?

Yup, you sure did, and not even as bad as some. I've heard of charging $100 just for a generic replacement muffler (installer cost probably about $15), plus $75 for a $20 tailpipe and a whole bunch for labor just to install the muffler and tailpipe. Total was around $330, and it sounded like crap.

Personally, I wouldn't deal with someone if they can't be clear on what they'll be doing.

Any particular reason you don't want to do it at home?

                Current prices at PartsAmerica.com:

Muffler (universal fit; direct fit will be somewhat more): Maremont 158573, $26US
Tailpipe (if even required): Maremont 360553, $27US

Extension pipes are usually around $5US each, and I'd figure on up to $12 in clamps for about $70US total, assuming the old Y-pipe is still good.

Find a set of duals in the junk yard, the pipes on my 90 cv came from a 97 cv. cost about $20 for the pipes.
                    What happened here?

they just bolted right up without a problem. I took everything after the cats. just measure accross the bolts after the cats and see if its the same as your car. It worked with my 90 cv, not sure if other years or models will work the same.
