    Timing Chain/Oil Pan

    I should remember, but

    You don't have to drop the oil pan to do a timing chain on a 5.0?

    I think I recall I had to on my 400...

    No you don't but you will have to cut the gasket at the corners. and glue the new one in to make it not leak... The only way I have ever been able to make it work is to glue the new pan gasket to the pan, and let it dry pretty well so it doesn't slip... then put ALOT of gasket sealer on the gasket... Especially near the corners, as that is where it will leak if it is going to leak anywhere... I usually glue the front timing case gasket to the timing case cover... and let it dry, so it doesn't slip around while yuor trying to install the cover... it can be a bitch...

      no need to drop the pan

      1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt
      2006 Lincoln Town Car Signature. Stock for now
      1989 Ford F-250 4x4 much much more to come, sefi converted so far.
      1986 Toyota pickup with LSC wheels and 225/60/16 tires.
      2008 Hyundai Elantra future Revcon toad
      1987 TriBurner and 1986 Alaska stokers keeping me warm. (and some pesky oil heat)

        just use the rubber gasket that goes around the timing cover and a big blob of ultra black on the pan....those cork pieces always slip out of place

            Nope, though there are some bolts for the timing cover bolted through the oil pan that will have to be removed. Be sure to cut out that piece of oil pan gasket and replace it with new gasket, and some of that ultra black stuff.

              I'm good with any double roller set you can get your hands on. Cloyes or whatever is fine. I got the last one at Napa.

                      yea and dont use advance for the timing set.....they list a single roller for all 5.0's.....they dont last as long

                        You'll get a gasket set with 2 you use, and 3 or 4 that go in the trash. The water pump will probably come with a useless gasket too. (you are replacing the water pump I hope). Change the front seal in the timing cover while its out, it comes in the timing gasket set. Chisel and a hammer to knock it out, block of wood to drive the new one in. If the car is all virginal, I'd also suggest a new damper and replacing all the hoses that connect to the water pump, since they'll probably get damaged while removing it. Do the thermostat too, they're dead simple to get out while there is no timing cover in the way.

                          I changed her radiator hoses and thermostat when I did the radiator. Few months back. And I am planning to change the water pump. Didn't think about the dampner.
