Primarily 2.73's, optional 3.08's, and I've heard of an occasional 3.27 with an AOD 5.0 convertible.

3.08s more common in 5-speed cars or found in both auto and 5-speed cars?

If you don't have the tag, you can pop the cover and get the numbers of the ring, or just turn the wheels and count how many turns it takes to rotate the driveshaft a full revolution.

3.08's are more common in auto Mustangs. I've seen only a couple of 5-speed mustangs with 3.08's, the rest were 2.73's.

Why does this seem to be the case at so darn many repair shops? What with all the state certifications and garbage places frequently require (at least, mechanic job postings here always want a state certification), you'd think the guys would be required to at least know SOMETHING instead of knowing absolutely jack as so often seems to be the case. Then again, I guess there are always those who are perfectly competent as long as they're doing exactly what they've always been told to do, and if you ask them to do what YOU want them to do they look at you like you're from Neptune and make wild proclamations about how what you want is impossible and/or unnecessary (i.e. guys who told me my wagon can't get a carburetor and doesn't need dual exhaust ... how come they're the ones making 20 bucks an hour to screw up people's cars and not me?).

Have I mentioned that the average automobile repair shop makes me VERY angry?

Keep in mind that most mechanics ARE idiots. In addition, please also remember that most shop owners do possess a bit of ego (Scott not included, although he's really freaking cocky about his Tie-Dye shirts, isn't he...). How is this prevalent? If a person opens a repair shop, the individual in question is under the impression that knows how to repair cars. Whether or not he can is not important. It's a matter of whether or not he can bullshit enough customers into thinking he can work on cars, if he isn't talented ( Scott actually has some talent, so it's not a problem there.). In addition, shop owners don't make money from hi-performance work, unless they charge the shit out of you, which is another reason why they insist on putting stock crap back on your car, exhaust work being a great example.

Exhaust pipe doesn't cost very much, yet they charge a shitload of money for custom-bent pipe, don't they? If they applied the same formula, buy low, work-level-low, sell high, to dual exhaust work, they don't make enough money to support $3500-$5500 a month in shop rent, because when they present a $600-$800 bill for dual exhaust and crappy mufflers to the customer, the customer won't pay it, as I wouldn't pay a greasy shop owner $1000 to put dual exhaust on my Thunderbird. Maybe someone else will, and they do, and that's why they stay in business, because stupid people continue to pay greasy shop owners to work on their cars.

My best solution? Learn how to fix it yourself, and keep your cars as simple as possible.....in addition, look hard for talented guys who actually appreciate your business along the way.

One other note? Most of these mechanics don't actually know how to fix the cars they work on...

I think they may be made of unobtanium now. I seem to recall someone else having problems finding one in the US.
