    Rear end gear

I wasn't sure to put this post here or in off topic, but here it is move it if you'd like.

Well I was under the impression that 3.08, 3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 3.90 were all the 3.xx ratios available. Now I guess it's new, but they have a 3.31 gear too. This is cool, cuz it gives me a little more than the 3.27 but better economy than the 3.55.

I broke down the 2005 Mustang GT rear end to get this gear. Pics below. I'll be using the gear, however my Dad doesn't care to sell it so he gave it to me to sell. Let me know if anybody needs a 31 spline LSD carrier with less than 3000miles.
As I've been doing a lot of research on the 31 vs the 28 spline I've learned a lot. The spider gears are interchangable, side gears are not interchangable from open to posi. Carrier differs in part number. Rear gear i not effected by 28 or 31 spline, nore is it effected by ABS ring. 2005 Mustang GT rear uses ABS rings at the end of the drive shafts, not on the carrier.
I wish I could use it, but spending the money on custom axels to use it would be a bit too much right now, even though it's only about $250.

I'ts been outside for a month or so, in direct weather. So that's all it is, surface rust. The differential housing is still shinny. lol

What, you don't see the S-spring in it? 31 Spline carriers don't have the openings on the end of the carrier, so you can't see the clutches on the 31s. I assure you that it is. SN agrees with me, and I can physicaly voutch that it is. Let him know, that I don't know if it eccepts the ABS ring or not. It should because all new cars do, but there is a possibility that it doesn't since the ABS stuff is at the ends of the alxes on this car. If he wants the axles too, make sure they will fit.

In your last picture of the rear differential before the gear pics, notice the little 1/2 circle on the right side of the carrier. Its at about the 2:00 position from the right end gear. If it is a traction-lock, you can see the tabs that keep the clutches from moving in that hole.

Well, cost is an issue. 3.31 is free. But the limo thing now thats cool. Too bad I just bought the 28 spline carrier. I'll drive with the 3.31 and see what I think of it. I may still change it, but for now it's a decent upgrade from a 3.08. And free to boot!

btw... 3.31 gear has been around a while

31 spline = 3.31 gear, used in trucks and HD applications.
28 spline = 3.27 usually found in passenger cars

$70 + shipping. I'll check USPS and UPS service to see their prices if you want it.

i had a 31 spline trac loc and was gonna get the axles from a limo.... BUT it turns out that the axle diameter is bigger, which means you need different bearings and supposedly those bearings wont fit in a rear end housing that has 28spline. PLUS, id rather break a half dozen 28spline axles at $15 each at the junkyard and have it back together within hours, than break 1 31spline and have to order it for $200 and wait for it. i know the 31 is stronger, but if you can break a 28 you can probably break a 31 too.
