    PCV screen removal trick

If you ever want to clean or replace your PCV screen I figured a way to remove it without pulling the upper plenum. The screen is located at the very rear of the lower intake manifold. Just remove the hose and attached valve (it pulls right ouit), then the rubber real bung (also, pulls right out). After that take a long (4-5") drywall screw and thread it into the screen material. Then you can use a pair of pliers to grab the screw and pull the screen out. If it is stuck, you can use a small amount of SEAFOAM or Carb Cleaner to free up the deposits, but don't overdo it, you don't want half a can of solvent thinning out all your oil when it seeps past ther screen.

My colony park had a 100% blockage, and my sedan with 80K mi. had a pretty much totally blocked screen as well.

A plugged screen can lead to higher crank pressures and burped gaskets. I hope that everyone likes my trick, it beats the ass off of pulling the plenum.

I actually used the drywall screw trick to get mine out, and I had the upper intake off already. Those things suck to remove.

the screw trick is good to know

edit: this info below is incorrect!

but you are mistaken on this part - that PCV port is pulling air into the intake system, and out of the crankcase. So spray away!! getting seafoam or TB cleaner in there is actually good.

True it is pulling air in........ but in the meantime if you spray liquid solvent in there, it drips as a liquid into the lifter valley and into the crankcase, diluting the oil.

            oops! you are right!

I got it mixed up... the PCV system is pulling fumes out of the crankcase at that spot... I had it backwards! I forgot that that spot is not part if the intake system, but a bridge into the lifter valley to get at crankcase gasses.

                  :bump:

Can I just pull the screen and grommet out, then spray the shit out of it with Seafoam, then put it back in? I just checked my PCV the other day, and it rattles but the screen looks to be clogged all the way through. I was prolly just going to use some needle-nosed pliers to take the screen, etc. out. I don't want to rip the shit out of it, then have it (the screen) be useless. I know a new one is like $7, but sometimes I am a real cheap fucker.

I think that the plugged screen is part of the reason I have some leaky valve cover gaskets that leak onto my exhaust and O2 sensor.

Also, what about the hose that is attatched to the PCV. Can I just spray the hell out of it, or are they usually fine from becoming clogged like the screen?.
