    Oil pump shaft in pan!!!!

I expected to have the new heads on by tonight.

The stinkin' pump shaft fell into the pan, it's between the pump & the side of the pan.

I can grab it w/a magnet, but it gets wedged in & I can't get it out.

Now I'm going to have to pull the entire engine anyway........AARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

you dont have to pull the engine, but it might be a good idea, then you can replace the rear main seal and the oil pump and the shaft and the oil pan gasket.......check the bearings while you are in there too and replace the motor mounts too

lincolnmania you said "you dont have to pull the engine"

I don't see how I can leave it in... @ one point it was jamming the crank, I could only turn it part way over....

I've never had to contend w/this before, do you know some other way to get it out?

      Thanks

undo the motor mounts, jack up the shortblock, unbolt the oil pan, remove the oil pump and pickup.....and dig the oil pump shaft out.....i suggest you get a new oil pump and shaft....oh and find the clip that used to be on the oil pump shaft.....the clip came off and that's how you lost the shaft.....it's happened to me a few times.

The clip could still be on the shaft, but slid down. If its worn out, it won't keep the driveshaft in place. While its apart, its a good idea to replace the shaft and pump anyway. Stick a new one-piece oil pan gasket in there too. Honestly though, if you have it torn down to the point where you've got no heads on it, its very little more work to pull the motor totally. Yanking the motor completely lets you really de-goop the engine bay, and clean the motor up. New pan gasket, seals, timing chain, etc while its out are a good idea too. Might as well not mess with it twice.

I would try to find some creative ways to get the shaft out with out pulling the motor. its a PITA, but it can be done.... how about long needle nose pliers or one of those retrival tools that has 4 fingers, flexible shaft and you push the top to operate the fingers and grab stuff.

on the other hand... if you do what Scott suggested, with the heads and intake off, you should have plenty of room to jack the motor up and drop, if not remove the oil pan.
If you go that route, I would replace the oil pump, pick up screen and pump drive shaft.
And make sure you use a Fel-pro one piece oil pan gasket.

If you can still see the shaft in the hole, I would try to get it out before you go and mess with the engine. But you don't have to pull the motor, I had the same damn thing happen to me, don't crank the engine!! You'll get it caught in between the crank and block!!!!! Linky to procedure http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showpost...44&postcount=7 To get the pan completely out, you might need to crank the engine. If the shaft is wedged between the crank and block, crank the engine a little bit to free it up, chances are it's already bent though, so you'll need a new one. Since the top of the motor is not there, you'll have plenty of room to do this, I mean, I had the lower intake and heads on still when I did mine.

Been there, done that, it sucks. I just unbolted the mounts lifted the motor part of the way up and lowered the oil pan. At that point I just shoved my skinny arms in there and grabbed it.

                      WOW,
That's the first time I ever saw a steel pretzel!!!!
I finally got it out this morning, I could just barely get to the clip, I bent it over, dropped the shaft back in & fished till the bent side was against the pan & yanked it out w, a BIG pair of pliers.

                      Thanks for all the input.

If the rod pretzeled, the pump jammed up somehow. Replace the pump or the new shaft will be a pretzel too.

Pics? It was wedged between the crank and block at one time right? Which would explain it being like that, if not, you have some pump problems and you might as well replace the pump too.

Ah I see, you got lucky, at least you didn't have to pull the pan. Let us know when you get everything back together.
