If it has no smog it's most likely vacuum leak. Put a vacuum gauge on it and see what you get.
There are vacuum lines that run to the smog pump that need to be sealed when the pump is removed. Check all the lines on the passenger fender well and make sure they either go to something or they are plugged. There's also a fat rubber vacuum line that goes from the pump, up the front of the motor behind the A/C compressor, under the upper intake along the fuel rail, and across to a T on the driver side near the cruise servo. Physically check (and spray with brake cleaner or whatever) every vacuum line on the car to make sure there are asbolutely no leaks.

yeah they're real cranky about vacuum. If its under 17", it will start to idle like poo. You rally want 18" or better for a nice idle. You should hear one of these with 20-21" at idle, you can damn near stand a coin on edge on that upper intake and it will stay there.

my 5lH.O wagon has the same problem, runs great but as it gets warmer the idel gets more irratic, my scaner shoots a code 41 at me "o2 sensor switching not detected, always running lean" its at the shop for its magnaflo/mustang exhaust sustem and diagnostics so it can get tested.

Well no vacuum leaks and the car seems to behaving somewhat better. I'm gonna have to unhook the battery again on my next day off. I really think the IAC is worn out. It works but is slow to respond and takes a bit to react to gear changes (p to d, etc).

could be getting sticky. I've fixed them before by removing them, spraying the hell out of them with carb cleaner to get the goo out, and putting them back on. It doesn't always work tho.

I actually cleaned it last week with elec. cleaner. The IAC had a thin coating of engine oil in it, and on the gasket too. Seems like bad valve guide or bad valve stem seals. The motor doesn't appear to be all that well maintained by the PO. When doing the lower intake gaskets I had to use a shop vac to ge all the carbon and junk out.

Try this, start the car, once it's running, unplug the ACT, see if you can shift it then. I would recommend a complete intake cleaning.

The IAC is working and the car will stall when unplugged and shifted into gear. The upper and lower were cleaned about 1000-1300 miles ago when I replaced lower intake gaskets. The inside of the iac is nasty even after cleaning, it's an oem from 1989. I think it's just worn out, clearances between the housing and iac rod are probably loose and the motor/solenoid is most likely weak.
