    coolant leak

after driving a while i smell anitfreeze and find a small amount around the
distributor behind the timing cover where would the leak come from on a 87 cv wag

    #2
I had the same leak for a long time. There is a bolt hole in the timing cover on some models that goes all the way through the timing cover and right next to a water jacket. The other end of it is in that little valley on the timing cover. It might be the waterpump gasket going or coolant creeping past the threads. To fix it I just sealed mine up with orange RTV

It's "standard rotation", it turns the same direction as the crankshaft.

I would check the thermostat housing to see if it's leaking, as it will deposit coolant in that area if it is.

There are also 3 hoses right in that area that could be leaking. The bypass hose, the pump to pipe hose, and the upper radiator hose. Thermostat housing leak is another very possible problem. Sounds like time to pressure test the system and see where its coming from.

Not to alarm you, but another source of a leak is the intake manifold gaskets.
The picture is the aftermath of a stream of coolant that came from the front of the intake manifold gasket

Hoses or intake gaskets. Good chance it's the intake gaskets.

I still say pressure test the system to find the leak before throwing time and money at the problem.

Could be one of the freeze plugs. On mine, the one on the right behind the alternator bracket was leaking coolant and creating a pool just to the right of the water pump.
