    1966 dodge monaco charging system

Ok i know this isent a ford but we are haveing a problem with my dads 66 dodge monaco convertable, its got a 318 wide block, the gauge is reading discharge, so far we have changed the alternator numeruse times, changed the voltage regulator, and the main wire comming from the alternator, we also cleand all the contacts and still the same thing, and car wont run when u unhook the batterie cable... any suggestions?

You need a voltage meter to make sure that the alternator/regulator is working or not. You need to test the alternator and voltage regulator off of the car also to be sure that you have a good alternator/regulator. The only other possibility is bad wiring. You could have a fusible link that melted or another wiring issue.

chryslers run the whole electrical system through that in-dash ammeter. If there is a connection problem, it won't charge. Are you still running a mechanical voltage regulator, or has it been switched over to an electronic one? How's your ground on the VR? Is the idiot lamp for the alternator good? believe it or not on some cars if that lamp is bad or missing, it won't charge.

Vicky won't charge without the idiot light hooked up.
