underdrive pulleys

    underdrive pulleys

    I was just wondering if I will actually see any improvements by installing underdrive pulleys.

    They will be on the racecar that will constantly see 2,500-6000rpms.

    well, it wont hurt anything. however you could use stang ones spacedout a bit since oyu are probably not running smog or ac. Water pumps and alternators will be happier with the reduction of speed.

      No smog or a/c, just water pump, alt, and P/S.

        just a small piece of advice...
        when you put on the pulley or pulleys...make SURE that the pulley or pulleys line up with each other exactly so that you do nor shred the belt...this happened to me. lol

            Mustang pullies are not the correct spacing. They'll work with spacers, but just bolting them on will not put the pulley where it belongs.

            It will help somewhat. Not a huge change, but it'll help keep your alternator together and reduce the liklihood of exploding coolant hoses. The stock accessories were designed for Granny driving so they spin shit like mad at low RPM. The stock governer shifts at 4200 WOT. Imagine cranking those accessories up to 6 grand and you can see the problem with over-revving them. Spinning the water pump too fast can also cause it to cavitate and boil the water instead of circulating it.

              the accesories definatley see over 4200, as mentioned the car stays in the 2,500-6000rpm range for 20 laps on a 3/8s mile track.

              How much will I have to space the pullies out to make them work? and what should I use to space them out?

                Not sure, but if you have both pullies, you should be able to measure and figure it out.

                  Yes.

                  You do realise that a set of pullies from a stang is not a true bolt on. The CV uses a double ribbed bottom pulley because there are 2 belts, as opposed to the single belt from a stang. The stangs also use a smooth wp pulley do to the reverse rotation wp.

                  As was stated above, a set of ud pullies from a stang are plentiful and cheap and can be made to work. Just be sure all pullies line up correctly.
                  A larger alternator pullie comes in the set, and on a race only car, is all you will really need. My 81 racecar has full charge at ~1200rpms.

                  Another alternative is use an electric motor to power the wp. Electric water pump drive kits are avail. at most speed shops and run the wp at a steady speed, and are usually wired in to a toggle sw. on the dash.
                  That would by pass the wp completely and add even more power to the flywheel.

                  Find an alt. bracket from a stang, lengthen the wires, and move the alt. over to the pass. side. Or get an alt. bracket from a 60s or 70s V8. That would mount the alt. way down low on the pass. side in place of the smog pump. The belt from the crank to the alt. would be incredibly short, the wp driven with an electric drive kit...

                  Should be worth at least 15hp. at the wheels.
