when was the last time the fuel filter was changed ?

ECMs seldom fail. Its possible but it wouldn't be the first thing I'd suspect. What codes does it produce? Check that first before throwing parts at the problem. It could be a lot of things and trying to just replace parts till the problem goes away will get very expensive.

well my friend has the new snap on ethos, works very good. we ran it on a few cars and even the cars running perfect would still throw some codes, my merucry witht the same problem as its had threw no codes, WHat is going on, it will sit there and sometime idle perfect but yesterday it barely would stay running idle would be up and down and if I put it in gear it would stall, but if I hold the gas flat to the floor it runs perfect, driving it will buck and detonate but again IF I hold it flat it will build power great and run exceelant, HELP PLEASE

Whats the temp when it does this?? Humidity?? Those things can mess with wiring bad if there is corrosion, esp grounds and shit.

Define "no codes". Does it literally produce nothing at all, or does it give an 11, which is all systems normal? Which code test did you run? There are three. Key on, engine off. Key on, engine on, and the continuous memory test. I believe there is also a "wiggle test" where you check for bad connections.

When you say they replaced the igniton module, did they also replace the pickup coil inside the distributor?

Mine was doing the same thing, it'd die cruising down the road, replaced ignition module, still did it. replaced pickup coil, fixed it. If yours hasn't been changed, it's 21 years old. the one in my '90 still had the Ford part number on it.

Remember, the dizzy has to be removed, and the gear pressed off to get to it though. I pulled the dizzy myself, took it to a shop, and they pressed the gear off, I replaced the part, and they pressed it back on...didn't even charge me!

                  Try this:

For all the bother of swapping the pickup, I'd just point you in the direction of a reman distributor. They come with a new pickup and its a drop-in operation. Assuming its bad of course. It might be, it may not be. I'd eliminate other possibilities first before tossing parts at the problem. I've tried that before and ended up poor and with a still broken car for my efforts.

+1. I had silmultaeneous ignition and fuel issues in my car, and I felt the ignition issue was due to a bad pickup coil. The coil alone is about $8, but as was mentioned, you have to take the distriibutor apart. I didn't have to press the gear off of mine though, I just took out some pins and worked it off (I have a carbed DS2 igniton 5.8L). The problem occured when I tried to remove the vac advance to get at the pick up coil. I broke the screws off on 3 distributors that I had, just trying to get the advance off. Since I exhausted my distributor source, I had to buy a reman DS distributor, which cost me about $45. New PU coil, advance, etc. All I had to do was drop it in, and set the timing up. Definitely the way to go in my case. Great suggestion, Thain.

you should at least get code 11, which means everything is working and there are no trouble codes set.

make sure you hooked the tester up correctly (dont forget the ground pigtail)
inspect the self test connector for broken or corroded terminals and wires.

Getting no response during the self test means you either have bad connection, a wiring problem or a faulty ECM.
