    couple questions, please help!

ok guys, i picked up an 86 GMQ with 42k on it, everything on this car except for a window motor is original. when the car is cool the idle lopes up and down. also when put into reverse it feels like it wants to stall. i plan on doing a whole tuneup with tps, iac, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, injector cleaning, pcv valve, removing and cleaning the upper intake and tb, re-doing all the upper gaskets. and valve cover gaskets. is there anything that you guys know of that's not on the list that would cause the idle and surging in reverse? other than that the fuel gauge doesn't work, can someone point me in the direction of a level sending unit or are there common issues/corrections for this problem?

thanks in advance! i need to get this car back to 100% so i can pick up where i left off on my previous (RIP) 86 GMQ and finally make it to SF!! i already ordered the rear colony park springs and i found some nice new gloss black steel AR wheels on ebay for 250ish shipped!

Id do the fuel filter and probably change the tranny fluid/filter while I was at it to. Before you mess with the sending unit I would check the wires and connectors first.

yea i forgot to mention that, fuel and air filters are going to be changed along with the trans pan gasket and trans filter + fluid flush. i'll check the connectors when i get a chance on sat morning. thanks for the reply!

anyother ideas on why the idle surges when cool and it sounds like it wants to stall when put into reverse? the reverse thing happens whether its hot or cold. i did notice that when i slightly touch the throttle it will stall when cool. could that be the tps? or the iac?

      thanks again guys!

tune up and check for vacuum leaks. They get real stupid with leaky vac lines.

well. i just ordered a bunch of stuff for the merc yesterday...

            front rotors
            front wheel bearings
            front pads
            both u-joints
            rear drums
            rear shoes
parking brake rebuild kit for both sides
            iac
            tps
            egr valve
            pcv valve
upper plenum gasket set (includes egr, TB, iac, spacer etc..)
            valve cover gaskets
            colony park springs
            coolant
            trans fluid
            trans pan gasket
            trans filter
            trans filter o-ring
            oil
            oil filter
            plugs
            wires
            ign. coil
            cap
            rotor
            fuel filter
fuel service kit (cleaner, conditioner, injector cleaner and 3 cans of TB cleaner for the upper intake, hooks up to a machine at work that holds the idle at 2k while these run through the fuel rail and intake)
a/c compressor (the one in the car works but i think from sitting it dried up, its real noisy, i added oil but it didn't get any quieter, the system was already updated to 134-a)

thats about it i think... yay for working at a shop that lets you order stuff and pay it off weekly! lol

hows that for a tune-up kit? all those things only cost me 793.27 total with tax!

after i get done paying that stuff off, she's off to the body shop to fix any dents and deep scratches, then its paint time! it has maroon-red interior so i'm going with black metallic paint with a maroon pinstripe.

            after paint.... its modding time!

              well thats a tune-up alright.

those compressors do get noisy when they get old. the one on my car made all sorts of racket, and it loaded the engine pretty good but it worked. New one is almost silent though, so I suspect the old one was just worn out. New one also makes much colder AC and the pressures are more in line with where they belong.

                Me too

I had a similar issue with my old 86 CVT. The vac lines did it to me. Mine was the e brake release under the dash. You could hear it hiss under the dash. One golf tee in the line and the problem vanished. The e brake line was rusted up and i didn't use it, so why did I need an automatic release? ;-)

i ditched that auto release right after I got my car. same problem, made annoying hissing noises and made the car idle funny.

hmm weird.... all i did was use throttle body cleaner and the idle problem went away, its been good for about a week now... anywho i just got the last of the parts yesterday, its gonna take a little while to install because i'm going to take my time, paint, and upgrade along the way.

anyone near bethlehem area that knows whats needed for the HO swap? i'm getting a new upper and lower intake already. i'll pay to have someone help me get it done?

You mentioned that it does it when the engine is cool. The ECM may think it is warm... Coolant temp switch??
