tips on re-installing the torque converter

How should I go about putting the torque converter back on? There is an orange o-ring on the transmission side that I can see, should I replace that? Also, if the rear main seal isn't really leaking, should I replace it while the motor is out, I've been reading up on it and everyone says its a bitch to get it right.

All I really know is to be VERY CAREFUL and make bloody sure it slips on the input shaft correctly. I did some damage once by not following that advice ... got kind of expensive. It's supposed to be easier if you're reinstalling a stock converter, though.

You can't damage it by putting it on, just make sure you put it all the way on. Because you can damage it the engine and trans by trying to bolt the engine to the trans when the torque converter is not fully installed. Push in on the converter and vigorously rotate and shake until the top of the studs is flush with the mounting face of the transmission.

Ok I got it all the way on and it went on pretty easily. I just don't see how to bolt it to the flywheel with the motor all in the way.

That's the easy part. Just make sure to line up the converter studs with the holes in the flexplate as the engine goes in, then slide the converter up against the flexplate and install the nuts.

The rear main seal should be replaced before the engine goes back in. If you're rebuilding it, it will come out anyway.

I'd consider doing the front seal on the transmission too just to make sure it doesn't leak when it goes back together.

make sure the convertor is fully seated.......the seal should be ok as long as it isnt damaged......turn the convertor slowly and push gently and feel for it to lock all the way in
