Just be carefull with the bolts... they like to break off in the timing cover...

make sure you remember where the bolts came from.. I made the mistake of thinking it wouldn't be a big deal and mixed them all up in a pile.

      NOT COOL!!

Change the thermostat while you're in there. Its easier to do with the water pump off. Also, use a lot of anti-seize compound when you put the bolts back into the water pump. Not mixing them up is also a good point, though you can figure out where they came from fairly easy if you have to.

Ok, so I picked up the T-stat and the timing chain and gear set. Anything I should know before proceeding? The last water pump and timing chain I did was on a SB chebby back in the mid 90's. And this looks just a wee bit more complicated.

            Thanks for the help mangs

Don't break any bolts. I didn't break any in mine when I did it, but my Dad broke a few when he did the pump on my '88. Be careful with the T stat too; I broke both bolts off in the intake when I was changing a t stat yesterday ('63 Olds 394). Luckily I was able to get the bolts out...

Nothing really of concern. Just try and keep track of the water pump bolts. I'd also get a new front seal, the one that goes in the timing cover. For the pan gasket, I wouldn't cut the pan gasket to use those little cork pieces. Just use a coating of RTV on the stock gasket and the new rubber section that goes under where the seal sits. Add a decent size blob of RTV on the corners where the rubber piece meets the cork so it doesn't leak.

Also if your balancer isn't in good shape, now is the time to replace it.

take a good size pice of cardboard draw something that looks like the WP. Draw about where the bolts are. When you take one off put it in that.:P After i done mine and gave poor ol Scott mang corprole tunel from explaining to me about the bolt patern. I thought that would have been the easer way hehe.

I used a ton of pb blaster on them suckers to. ( like let them soak over night )

I just open the box with the new pump and sit the bolts in where they go as I remove them from the old pump

Reckon I'll prolly do like Gadget said, was what I did when I did the accessories on the 460 for our f100. Its just that I have a rather small monetary margin of error for this project. I can't afford to pay a mechanic to clean up my mess if I fork it up. And since I started snooping round here and asking questions, y'all have saved me quite a bit of loot in that department.

                      Thanks again mangs
