    Quick AOD trans question

Hey Scott, I know it is not a vic related question but hopefully you can save the day. I recently purchased a 87 Mustang with the 5.0 with the AOD transmission. Well on the way home the trans crapped out. I bought a used trans however the trans appears to have come out of a different car. How can I go about swapping the shifter linkage on the trans? I removed the pan to change the filter and figure out how to change it and I saw a nut on a shaft with the linkage. Do I undo that or does it just pop off on the outside some how? I dont wanna undo the wrong thing and mess the whole thing up. If it is the nut do you have any guess as to what size it is? I tried a 19mm just to see if it fits but it was a touch to small and I dont ever recall seeing a 20mm wrench (not to say that they dont exist thou.)? Sorry for rambling on but I gotta get this fixed ASAP and any help you could provide would be amazing. Thanks mang and take it easy.

You have to remove the nut and pin... You need to bond with your local Craftsman outlet if you don't have a decent set of wrenches in your box.......

small nut on the outside to remove the TV lever. Large nut on the inside comes off, and there is a roll pin in there too. I don't know the size, but large metrics do exist, just have to find the large wrench set with the big ones instead of the normal set that only goes to 19. It might even be a standard size, I don't recall.

If it's in an AOD, I'm sure it's metric. I've not swapped levers on an AOD, but I've done it on a C4 and that was plenty of fun. Supposedly it can be done with the valvebody in place (on the C4, anyway), but I couldn't figure out how to do that so I went ahead and removed the valvebody to give me more room to work.

Reminds me, here's a metric wrench set I really ought to buy one of these days....

.... though this smaller set may well do what you need as well:

That in turn reminds me, I need a good source for a 12mm 12-point flex socket, for obvious reasons. I'm having no luck finding one online except from Snap-On for $$ ... is it something Crapsman keeps on hand?

Could be metric, don't remember. I've done it twice now I think, but both times it was just a matter of picking whatever size fit, and I didn't bother to pay attention to that detail. It will come apart with the valve body in place. Just have to be careful to not dislocate the TV lever internally, and the tang on the shift lever must go back into place on the side of the valve body, otherwise you have no gears.

I'd be careful with that small nut on the outside of the arm. The previous owner of my car managed to snap that nut/ stud/ pin right off... Not sure how that happened, but I was pretty annoyed when I saw that.

Yea, i have seen bigger wrenches then a 19mm just never a 20mm. Always seen 21, 22, ect. It just appered to be that odd ball inbetween. So basiclly I have to remove the nut on the inside and keep everything in place while I pull it out.

Yes, they make them. I have them. Used it on some weird off size suspension bolt somewhere.

The nut on the inside is either 7/8th's or 13/16th's, I cannot remember. However, a standard wrench will work on the nut. The fun part is fishing the roll pin out of the case, as that is what keeps the shifter arm centrally located. Use a small set of wire cutters/dykes to reach in and lever it out. The pin is located in the pan rail.

Sears has them, because the 200+ tool box my girlfriend bought has the 12mm 12-point.

22mm box end wrenchs are great for the front generator nut on VW bugs. ask me how i know.

Bah, crescent wrench is plenty good for that one.
