    Broken Tranny mount???

i have a weird clunking noise when im driving along, if i let off the accelerator the i can here a clunk and feel it in the floor, would this be caused from a broken tranny mount or engine mount? or somthing totaly differnt?
Also when im driving if i let off on the gas then press it again the reves will go up then it will slam back into gear, tranny fluid is full, and dosent seem burnt...

clunk could be internal trans problems, or bad U joints. Easy check for the trans mount, put the car up in the air, get underneath, and try to pick the trans up. Stick a pry bar under the tailshaft and see if it moves. Don't hang on it or you will bust the mount, but if you can pick the trans up fairly easy, its dead. Also, if you poke it with your finger and the rubber has the consistency of Jell-O, its shot. When the transmission leaks, it turns the mount to goo. Motor mounts you can check by opening the hood and putting the car in gear. If you give it some throttle, you'll see the motor pick up off the mount if its busted. Do this in forward and reverse to check both mounts. I'll pretty much guarantee they aren't in the best of shape, but as long as the motor isn't picking up and slamming back down, thats probably not the immediate issue.

The rev than engage sounds like the filter is clogged. Is the fluid decent looking? If so, I'd try servicing the trans. If that doesn't fix it, just ignore it till the trans dies.

How would putting in forward and reverse check both mounts? The engine only turns one way and only lifts on one side with the turn. Or am I just not getting it today.

yes you're right. but don't forget that the gears in the transmission spin in the opposite direction for reverse only those gears would be spinning, cause they're the gears that are getting fluid. Anyway, it would pull on the engine to one side. If the mount is busted, then the engine will be picked up off the mount and lean towards the other side of the car.

but when you put it in reveres the torque pushes against the rear gears in the opposite directions

yeh the drive axle/s in a car will twist the engine/trans as a unit, since every action has an equal and opposite re-action.

the rear rubber mount on my merc is right fudged and sorta does the same thing, put a bar between the trans and cross member and tryto move it around and that will tell you the cond of the mount

At least the tranny mount is easy to change out once you persuade those huge rusty crossmember bolts that you really do want them to come out. Engine mounts, on the other hand, still scare me.

motor mounts are a piece of cake. just remove the front suspension, easy as pie to access the bolts

Also possible with it in place, just need good flex joints and patience. Its definitely a whole lot more irritating with the lower arms in.
