    Supercharger/turbocharger

    Dear Pathers,
Would it be possible to install a supercharger to a 5.0L and if so, what would the difference in mileage/performance be?

Of course it's possible. Guys do it with Mustangs all the time... with Panthers it's a bit more difficult but it's all a question of how much you want to pay.

With stock accessories, I'm not sure. There is no kit pre-made for that so some customized accessory stuff would be required. I'd say stick a Vortech type where the smog pump goes, but thats required for inspection in your state. Air plumbing would also have to get a little creative. Same with the turbocharger. If you didn't have an AC or smog equipment, probably twin turbos would be fairly easy. Single might be possible if mounted on the driver's side only.

As far as economy changes, absolutely no idea. More air in needs more fuel as well, so I'd tend to think it would drop economy somewhat, though it would make more power.

More power means that the engine doesn't have to work as hard to propel 2 tons. I heard the supercharging atomizes the fuel better and would make better MPG

            Dear Panthers,
I was wondering about http://www.powerdyne.com/explorer.htm. They claim to do nothing until the pedal hits the metal and powerdyne may be cheaper.

I saw a guy use a Kenne bell supercharger on a box wagon. He had to have the A/C lines re bent to work with the passenger side ( mustang style) TB.

With the smallish amount of boost they come set up for, and provided the engine is in good condition you should be able to. I think these are running like 6 psi. Probably a bad idea to push it much past that with stock pistons. If the motor is tired and the head gaskets are original, I don't know that I'd try it though.

                      Dear Panthers,
My engine has 230 on it, 110 since rebuild but no bad signs yet. For my purposes - mostly Interstate cruise control with occasional GETONIT moments, the powerdyne supercharger is very interesting as is the fact that they are made for explorers and mustangs of my vintage (89) and are available used for less than 2 k. Does anyone have any experience with these rigs?

I've driven a mustang with one. Worked well I guess. They require rebuilds, mainly belt replacements. IIRC, most mustang people shy away from them. Luckily, even if the belt breaks the car will still be drivable.

The most common OEM blower is the Eaton, it is very reliable. The Eatons are also very common and not very expensive. I have been drawing up a setup to use an Eaton M90 on a 302 with panther accessories.

Also would bolt up nicely in the factory alt position and be easy to plumb.
